Don’t Burn Your Starter in the Ninth
A postseason reminder on flexible teams and smarter assignments.
The Mariners are about to kick off (first pitch?) their first ALDS series in 24 years. That’s a big deal. Some of us even get the privilege of seeing it live at T-Mobile!
Here’s the connection: in baseball, you set your lineup based on the situation. You don’t bring Muñoz in during the second inning. Obvious in sports, but easy to forget in business.
We recently re-balanced our portfolio and took a closer look at who was serving which properties. Over time, we’d fallen into the habit of thinking: this tech belongs to this property, so they should solve all that property’s problems. Why tho?
The truth is, our team has different strengths. Some techs are fast but need oversight. Others are problem-solvers who thrive on tricky jobs, but speed isn’t their strength. We noticed turnovers weren’t finishing as quickly as we wanted. We were scratching our heads on some solutions or vendor calls.
So we adjusted. Monday morning huddles now start with one simple question: who do we need, where, why, and when? We even built a simple in-house scheduler app (via Google’s AppSheets) so everyone could see the plan at a glance. The results? Faster turnovers. Cleaner move-ins. Significant cost savings. And our puzzle-solvers working on the projects that actually need them.
If you know a client struggling with turnovers, delayed work orders, or payroll allocation, inflexibility could be the issue. Maybe the root cause, maybe not—but worth asking: is the lineup matching the challenge, or are they using a starter to close in the ninth? Do they even have a bid league line up? Call us if they could use a pep talk, some insight, or even a vendor rec. Always happy to share.
